Tamba Kanta Market – Mumbai

Tamba Kanta is a very old market in south Mumbai, situated near famous Bhuleshwar market. ‘Tamba’ means copper and ‘Kanta’ means weighing machine. There are shops in line where sellers weigh copper/ brass utensils and give it on the wholesale or retail basis to customers. These days, of course, they do sell steel and aluminum items which are popular in Indian kitchens.

I happened to visit this market to buy brass and copper utensils. I bought one copper water bottle that can store 950 ml water for INR 350. This is available with other retailers in Mumbai for INR 500 and above depending on the quality. I also bought some brass utilities for my pooja mandir which were highly priced on online shopping portals and were not available with retailers in suburbs.

Even after living for so long in Mumbai, I was not aware of this market. It is an experience to visit such a place and it gives a different joy of shopping in the old market. You get ample choice and little bargaining power for the price. If you like to set up your home/ kitchen with brass or copper items, you must make time on weekends to visit Tamba Kanta market.

It is advisable to buy many items or in bulk to get the lesser price and to make up for the distance that you travel here. People in this market are very helpful. If something is not available with them but is available in the specific shop, they do tell you so please ask for help.

If you are traveling on the western rail line, you can get down either at Marine Lines station and take a shared cab. The landmark is Surti Vegetarian Restaurant. If you are traveling on the central or harbor rail line, you can get down at Masjid Bandar station and walk for 15 minutes. To save your time and money, it is better to avoid taking a cab from any of this stations as the entire area is crowded. You can take a shared cab though.

Hope you enjoy a  ride of Tamba Kanta. Happy Shopping!
