Red rice

I cannot imagine a full-fledged Indian meal without lentils’ curry and rice i.e. ‘Dal-Chawal’ (in Hindi) or ‘Varan-Bhat’ (in Marathi). Not to forget a spoonful of ghee (clarified butter) on it.

I crave for tender, boiled white rice every alternate day. I also rely on this combination when I want to give a break to my tummy after munching on junk, spicy, toothsome food.

However, with the time, I have realized the needs of my body. I don’t do physically strenuous tasks on a daily basis; hence the need for carbohydrates or starch is minimum.

White rice is a rich source of carbs and if these carbs are not utilized by our body, this will be converted into excess insulin and fats. This may lead to diabetes or obesity. Hence, it is important to find a replacement for white rice. One of my friends suggested me to try red rice in place of white rice.

Facts:

Red rice and brown rice are good substitutes for white rice. Both are kind of similar. However, red rice is rich in antioxidants.

Red rice contains fiber, iron, other minerals, and antioxidants. It is a whole grain which retains the entire grain seed.

The consumption of red rice lowers the risk of obesity, heart diseases, bad cholesterol level, cancer, diabetes etc.

It improves bowel movement, oxygen circulation and the energy level in the body.

Recipe:

Let’s see how to boil red rice for 2 persons:

  • Take 1 small cup of red rice.
  • Add 2.5 small cups of water in it and soak for half an hour.
  • Change the water and rinse the rice.
  • Keep the rice container to boil in a pressure cooker.
  • After 9 whistles, switch off the gas.
  • After the pressure comes down, rice is ready to serve.
  • You can also add a pinch of salt and a spoon of ghee to add flavor to it.

It takes more than double water and whistles to cook this rice compared to white rice. If water still remains in the container, give 1 more whistle and your rice is ready.

The measurement above will make the rice very soft. It takes time to chew this rice due to the high fiber content.

I can promise you that you won’t be hungry for a while after consuming red rice. Red rice would taste good with any curry.
