Fenugreek seeds (Methi) for healthy hair

Traditionally in India, many women used to soak fenugreek seeds (‘Methi dana’ in Hindi) in a jar/bottle of their hair oil and apply it to hair and scalp. I have seen such women having healthy and long hair even in their 70s and 80s.

Let’s see the measurement.

  • Take 1 tablespoon of fenugreek seeds for 100 ml/ 1 cup of any herbal hair oil preferably coconut oil.
  • Heat the oil along with fenugreek seeds for 1 or 2 minutes. Seeds will crackle. Please don’t burn the oil.
  • Keep it aside for 6/7 hours. Let it cool down completely. Don’t cover it; else it may catch moisture.
  • Pour it into your hair oil jar/bottle preferably glass and store it.
  • Shake the bottle well before you take out the oil for application.
  • Filter this oil so that fenugreek seeds will be separated from the oil.
  • Massage this oil gently to your scalp and hair.
  • After a few hours, you can shampoo your hair.
  • This oil may be sufficient for a week.
  • You can apply this oil twice or thrice a week.

You need to change the measurement of fenugreek seeds in proportion to the quantity of your hair oil.

Fenugreek seeds promote hair growth, improve the texture of hair and make roots strong. They prevent hair loss, baldness, premature greying, dandruff, etc.

This is a natural and cost-effective way of maintaining your hair. Of course, you also need to have a balanced diet for healthy hair.

In India, fenugreek seeds are used in cooking. One common way is adding them while tempering (‘Tadka’ in Hindi) vegetables or curries.
